Short answer
Yes. Most laundry sheets, BioPure included, contain PVA (polyvinyl alcohol). PVA is a synthetic polymer that dissolves in water, and it's what holds the sheet together. So a laundry sheet isn't "plastic-free". What BioPure does cut out is the plastic around it: the box and insert are card, with no plastic wrap and no PVA film.
What PVA is and why sheets use it
PVA (also written PVOH) is a water-soluble polymer. It's the same family of material used for the film on laundry and dishwasher capsules. In a sheet, it forms the thin, tearable layer that carries the detergent and dissolves during the wash.

You'll see it on the BioPure ingredient list as "PVA". Here's the full Fragrance Free list, as printed:
Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate, Starch, Water, PVA, Glycerin, Sodium Citrate, C12-14 alcohols ethoxylated, C12-14-secondary ethoxylated, Saponins, PEG-12 Dimethicone, Protease.
Do laundry sheets leave microplastics in the water?
This is the question most people actually mean. PVA in sheets is designed to dissolve, not break into solid bits. A 2026 peer-reviewed study in ACS Applied Polymer Materials (funded by Procter & Gamble) tested detergent-grade PVA under realistic home washing and found no microplastic-like particles; the PVA stayed dissolved as single molecular chains. Dissolving is not the same as breaking down, though. What happens next depends on the wastewater treatment it reaches, and campaign groups such as the Plastic Soup Foundation argue it should still count as plastic. We think you should know both sides.

So where is the plastic saving?
In the packaging. A typical liquid detergent comes in a rigid plastic bottle with a cap. BioPure comes in a card box with a card insert, no plastic wrap and no PVA film. Thirty sheets give up to 60 washes: half a sheet for a small load, one for a regular load, two for a heavily soiled one. New to sheets? What's in a BioPure pack
Thirty sheets, up to 60 washes, in three scents: Summer Bloom, Linen Blossom or Fragrance Free. The full ingredient list is printed above, so you can check exactly what goes in your drum. For more detail, see what's inside BioPure laundry sheets.
Read the label before use. The sheets carry hazard warnings (the Fragrance Free label lists skin and eye irritation), so keep them dry, sealed and away from children.

FAQ
Are laundry sheets plastic-free?
No. Nearly all laundry sheets contain PVA, a water-soluble polymer. BioPure's packaging has no plastic: card box, card insert, no wrap.
Is PVA the same as microplastic?
The EU microplastics restriction (Regulation 2023/2055) excludes polymers that dissolve in water. Lab tests on detergent-grade PVA found no microplastic particles after washing. Some campaigners still class it as plastic.
Do laundry pods contain PVA too?
Yes. The film around most laundry and dishwasher capsules is PVA.
How many washes are in a pack of BioPure?
Thirty sheets, up to 60 washes. Use half a sheet for small loads, one for regular loads, two for heavy ones.
Can I return BioPure if it doesn't suit me?
Yes. BioPure is covered by our 30-day money-back guarantee. See the refund policy for terms.
