Is white vinegar safe for washing clothes?

Yes. Distilled white vinegar is pH 2.4 — acidic enough to dissolve soap residue and limescale, but not so harsh it damages cotton or synthetic fibres. It's genuinely gentler on your washing machine than conventional fabric softeners, which leave a waxy build-up that clogs drum seals over time.

How much white vinegar should I use per wash?

120ml (about half a cup) in the fabric softener compartment for a standard 6–8kg load. For heavily soiled sportswear or musty towels, 250ml in the drum. For stubborn whites, 250ml with your usual detergent at 40°C or above.

Does white vinegar actually soften clothes?

Yes — via a different mechanism to synthetic softeners. It works by rinsing out the alkaline residue left behind by detergent, which is what makes fabric feel stiff. The result is genuinely soft clothes without the silicone coating that synthetic softeners leave behind.

Will my clothes smell of vinegar?

What about tumble dryers — can I add vinegar there?
